When we are tempted to doubt if our prayers matter, we can read Lukes Gospel and see that Jesus had no such doubts. If they were not there to encourage Jesus in the direction he had to go, I cannot think of what else they would have had to say about that departure. So often we read incidents like this one in the Bible and we rarify them, put them up on a pedestal, and assume that if such a thing were to happen today and to us, it would change the world and shake up everything. We are told that the appearance of Jesus was as bright as lightning. Now lightning is pretty bright. They know the mind and will of God. Peter might be taking his idea for the three booths from the Feast of Tabernacles. He heard with his own ears the voice from heaven, This is my Son, my Chosen One.. Peter will refer to it as the holy mountain (2 Peter 1:18). Often when someone dies they are said to have fallen asleep. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was Jesus understands our suffering because he suffered greatly in his days on the earth. A rather literal translation would be that the disciples were weighed down with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory.. 7-9. Its honestly hard to explain and understand. The exodon about which Moses and Elijah are speaking here is Jesus death, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem (v. 31). This Voice from the cloud seems to be articulating these very words, making the point that this long-awaited Prophetthe Messiah is here. Luke says that this epiphany on the mountaintop took place eight days after Peters famous confession of Jesus as the Christ. They are left with Jesus and silence. Since this part of my sermon commentary is about Questions, Ill just ask a few of the ones that come to my mind in this startlingly odd passage. English versions of the Bible vary widely in how they translate that verse. Luke tells us that Peter did not know what he was saying, something which is quite evident. We have here the narrative of Christ's transfiguration, which was designed for a specimen of that glory of his in which he will come to judge the world, of which he had lately been speaking, and, consequently, an encouragement to his disciples to suffer for him, and never to be Scripture says they were heavy with sleep butwere fully awake.(9:32) Another way of saying it is that they were in a stupor. This passage in Hebrews is startling to me. Christs cross was necessary so that he might enter into his glory (Luke 24:26; see also Philippians 2:5-11). A third possible reason for the Transfiguration: Just a week earlier, Jesus spoke hard words about his own suffering on the Cross, and the disciples suffering for his sake. Do you know one who is sorry for having listened? You fall to the ground trembling, your hair standing straight up. So his need for prayer may not have been that much different than ours. A few verses later, at 9:51, Luke writes that Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem, where all that has been spoken of will take place for him. But then I read some of the biblical accounts when angels would appear in glory to Gods people, and those people were typically terrified. As a young believer, I would think, Well, Jesus was the Son of God. Christ has transformed more lives than we can count. II. (and) a voice came out of the cloud, saying, Throughout the scriptures, light is a symbol of God, so that whenever we come into the presence of God, were filled with the light of Gods love, and, like a prism, the radiance of God is reflected and refracted through us to illumine and enlighten others. There is something so glorious about God and his kingdom that we will melt when confronted with it. Luke clearly understands Jesus to be a new Moses. An event like this has only a few parallels. A beautiful, delicate butterfly. Moses and Elijah, who were leaving Jesus prior to the voice from the cloud (v. 33), are gone. We can read about that in Luke 22 just hours before the Crucifixion. But as Buechner says, there are moments of transfiguration in all our lives. Luke 9:28-36 Commentary. And it also testifies to us of what Jesus Christ will do soon when he returns. Mark 9:2-8. As the "sayings" so definitely connected with the transfiguration scene are those announcing His deathat which Peter and all the Twelve were so startled and scandalizedso this scene was designed to show to the eyes as well as the heart how glorious that death was in the view of Heaven. In this one, they are groggy but sufficiently awake to see what was happening. For now, let it suffice that something heavenly is happening. The Transfiguration is a story with six characters, but none we can, or probably want to, identify with fully. 29. First Reading Commentary on Exodus 34:29-35 Moses countenance glows Peter, James, and John already believed in life after death, but surely this moment dramatically increased their convictions that everything they had been taught about life after death was absolutely true. Luke 9 is no exception. The Transfiguration is a Christological festival in the church year, which means that the story of the Transfiguration deserves attention on its own. And if it seems odd to hear God the Father follow up this visual display with advice that has to do with listening and not looking, maybe thats because we, too, are often overly fixated on outward fame and power and glory as the world defines all those things and maybe that gets in the way of our truly listening to what Jesus says about humility and sacrifice and being servants of the lowest of the low in also our societies yet today. But then we all often miss seeing this in each other as often as not. Jesus came to set people free from sin. Some of us might relate to this. Its not like Moses had gotten his face onto the $1 bill or that Elijah had had his visage plastered all over the place in Israel the way we Americans do with Abraham Lincolns face. 41Jesus answered, Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you?
